New Artist Residency Partnership with HBCU & Morgan State University

The artist residency program of the Truro Center for the Arts at Edgewood Farm is a program that began in 2017, developed to encourage the development of creative, intellectual and personal growth of emerging and established artists. It works in collaboration with our distinguished educational facility at the Castle Hill Campus, whose mission is to foster the arts for the local and regional community.

The Truro Center for the Arts at Edgewood Farm focuses on the development of “the artistic process” by providing artists a beautiful place to work for an extended period of time. The residency program at Edgewood Farm strives to bring a broader artistic cultural conversation to the local community and economy of the Outer Cape.

The residency program has debuted a partnership between Morgan State University, a Historically Black College and University (“HBCU”) founded in 1867 in Baltimore, MD and the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill (“Castle Hill’). Made possible by the vision and generosity of Nancy and Al Osborne in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Castle Hill, the program brings young Black artists from Morgan State to Truro for residencies on Castle Hill’s historic Edgewood Farm campus.

Jamal Thorne

The fellowships were co-designed and are jointly administered by Castle Hill and Jamal Thorne, Teaching Professor and the Media Art Program Coordinator at Northeastern University in Boston and Eric Briscoe, Professor of Art and Coordinator of Visual Arts at Morgan State.

The program began in Spring, 2022 with the first Osborne Fellows. We plan that it will grow as it develops. Housed at Edgewood Farm for two weeks in the fall and in the spring, each Fellow is given a private room, a studio and access to all of the facilities and supplies of Castle Hill’s two campuses. We introduce them to the rich arts community and resources on the Outer Cape and give them the freedom, space and peace to make their work and begin the transition from academia to the community of working artists.

The fellows are mentored by Professors Thorne and Briscoe, as well as by the artists of Castle Hill and our Executive Artistic Director, Cherie Mittenthal. The Osborne Fellows residency is free of charge including transportation and a basic expenses stipend.
