Explore the possibilities basketry techniques for sculpture. Using variations on traditional wire basketry, twining, and coiling with soft materials, students will learn multiple weaving techniques to make everything from small baskets to large scale installations. Particular attention will be paid to pattern and line quality in 3D work. Ways to include found objects and methods for turning a wide variety of upcycled materials into woven sculptures will be covered, as well as how to incorporate sculptural basketry into your other art making practice(s). The first half of the workshop will focus on demos and time for students to make their own sample “library” to refer to in their future work. The second half will involve one-on-one check-ins and problem solving as students delve into individual projects using the techniques they’ve learned. At the end of the workshop, we’ll have a friendly group critique to provide feedback on completed and/or in-progress work and help create clarity for future projects.  No fibers or basketry experience necessary.

Hanna Vogel is an artist and educator in Philadelphia, PA. She grew up in rural Northern California and received a BFA from the California College of the Arts and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, including at The National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, The Hunterdon Art Museum, The Spartanburg Art Museum, The Delaware Contemporary, and multiple colleges and universities in the United States. Since 2017, her work has been the subject of 13 solo exhibitions. She has participated in residencies at Yaddo, I-Park, Furman University, Sculpture Space, The Kunstlerdorf Schoppingen Foundation, and the Westport Land Trust. Her fellowships/grants include those from the California College of the Arts, the Lighton International Artist Exchange Program, Fleisher Art Memorial, Fiber Art Now, and Philadelphia Sculptors among others. She lives with her husband, daughter, and adorable tiny mutt, Wingnut.
