The focus of this class, From Tree to Totem, is to provide assistance to the artist having the vision or intent to create a personal, totemic sculpture in wood. Whether your piece is assembled, constructed, or carved, space, tools and guidance specific to woodworking will be available. An introduction to various methods of mechanical and adhesive connections will aid and enable the durable creation of your unique expression. It is urged, but not essential, that you bring to the class any particular sketches and material(s) that you wish to convert to a three-dimensional piece of work.

From raw forest gleanings to driftwood to dimensional lumber, all forms of wood will be accommodated. Miscellaneous scrap lumber will also be available for use.

A totem is a spiritual symbol, often an animal, plant, or object, representing a family, clan, or tribe, originating from Ojibwe culture, while totem poles are carved poles depicting figures important to Northwest Coast Indigenous peoples.

Dave Holbrook is a self-taught sculptor working primarily in wood. His work has been featured in juried exhibitions including the Bristol Art Museum in Rhode Island, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Cotuit Center for the Arts, and the Provincetown Art Association Museum. His permanent, public sculpture, “Ripple Effect,” (bronze, granite) is installed on Main Street in Orleans, MA. Dave owned and ran a residential construction business on the Cape from the late 1970’s into the 2000’s, and subsequently served for 10 years as an editor at the Journal of Light Construction (JLC), the nation’s premier print and online resource for the homebuilding and remodeling industry. His cabinetwork and furniture is installed in many homes both locally and out of state. He currently resides in South Orleans, MA with his wife, the artist Eve Aspinwall.
