Learn about Western Raku, Obvara, Horse Hair and Naked Raku, and the spontaneous and unpredictable magic and alchemy of these three firing processes, There also will be an opportunity to experiment with plain and colored terra sigillata. The workshop is intended for ceramicists who have limited to no previous knowledge of Alternative Firing techniques or for those who would like a fresh perspective on these firing methods. This is a firing only workshop – we will not be making any clay pieces.
Students will need to bring their own bisque ware and green ware ceramic pieces no larger than 10” tall and 5” wide:
6-7 bone dry pieces for experimenting with terra sig
6-7 bisqued pieces

Lois Hirshberg has been a studio potter on Cape Cod, specializing in Western Raku, for over 45 years. She began her love of ceramics at Mudflat Studios in the 1970s. After studying clay pottery at Bezalel School of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and in Japan with Parsons School of Design, Lois earned a M.A. in Art Therapy from Lesley University.
