In this workshop we will explore gargoyles and rice and ramen bowls. Using the wheel we will throw parts for a Chihuahua-sized beast. Switching to hand-building we will build the beast and add faces, arms, legs, tails, googley eyes, teeth and whatever meets your vision. You can make these as fanciful or as realistic as you’d like.
Steve will also demonstrate thrown bowls with hand-carved feet and Korean style slip designs. Using a classic Japanese “Tombo” (dragonfly) measuring tool, we will work toward a matched set of bowls.
Steve’s introduction to clay in Japan laid the foundation for his craft and art. An educational background in visual design, study of Japanese tea ceremony, and love of food all add to his functional ceramics - pots that can be used every day and treasured as works of art. His sculptural work focuses on mythical beasts and microscopic organisms. Steve teaches at Mudflat Pottery School and Harvard Ceramics.
