Monotype is a one of kind painterly print, while monoprint involves printing in a series that can be repeated with variations and mixed media. The approaches are ideal for the painter who would like to produce a body of work on paper. Monotype/print also opens up the contemporary possibility of stepping away from traditional painting to work efficiently in multiples. This workshop will demonstrate the basic techniques to make a successful monotype print and extend the process into working with monoprint in seriality to execute a body of work. Some of these techniques include the process of painting on a surface suitable for monotype, operating a printing press, preparing paper for printing, color mixing, re-registration, and experimental techniques/materials. Examples of notable artists’ monoprints will be introduced. Students should come to class with an experimental outlook. All levels of experience are welcome from the beginner to seasoned artist.
