Needle felting is a captivating art form in which soft, airy wool is transformed into dense, sculptural shapes using a specialized felting needle. Through this almost magical process, loose fibers gradually become charming, three-dimensional characters. The technique is wonderfully accessible and offers nearly limitless creative possibilities. In this workshop, students will craft wool figures built around a Styrofoam ball, which serves as the internal structure. Using a barbed felting needle, they will repeatedly “stab” the wool, causing the fibers to interlock and slowly take shape.

Because the needles are barbed, the first hour of class will be dedicated to safety, ensuring that students learn proper, careful handling before beginning their projects. This workshop is recommended for children ages five and up.

Heidi Filmer spent four years teaching art at Cuttyhunk Elementary School on Cuttyhunk Island and 10 years teaching STEAM base art and collaborative art projects through Mass Audubon and multiple school districts.Heidi is currently teaching at Nauset Middle School.
