Over many seasons of making paintings the serious artist will develop strategies that foster the exploration of inspiration. Having a toolkit of learned pathways, the fledgling glimmer of an idea can lift off. This is done through the hard work of experimenting and editing towards the final piece. Our challenge often lies in the preservation and amplification of that initial flash of inspiration.... the excitement that led you to the studio in the first place.

It is my experience that if a painter follows a series of steps aimed at such a result, the final work will contain deeper meaning both for the artist as well as the eventual audience.

The above approach holds the advantage of formalizing and then stretching the creative studio practice. Such a method allows for unexpected results and often leads to new discoveries about the medium. A significant portion of our time together will be spent using these three exercises to reinterpret the same subject. Just as programming a computer or coding software allows for an astonishing range of outcomes, the creation of an arresting and unique work of art can happen in a similar environment. Similarly, planning ahead before putting paint to panel, allow for the artist move beyond a creative impasse, including the confidence to return to your work after a period of “rest.”
