Advanced Painting Techniques

This “Next Level” workshop is designed to take students beyond the basics involved in working with wax and resin. A hands-on studio course, this workshop will offer participants a deeper understanding of contemporary use, while providing them plenty of time to develop and explore their personal ideas and visual vocabulary on larger (up to 18" x 18") or multiple panels. An emphasis will be placed on fusing; navigating the challenges of working larger from concept design to technical challenges; and expressing meaning through an exploration of mark making and techniques to create translucency and depth. Dietlind will work individually with each participant around their own practice and how they can further develop their painting ability, control, and understanding of the visual language.  The objective is to make sure that each student returns to their practice with new tools and knowledge, as well as a deeper connection to their own ideas and how to express them.

Dietlind Vander Schaaf holds an MFA from the University of San Francisco and an MA from the University of Southern Maine. Her work has been described in terms of it’s focus on “showcasing the wax itself, encasing objects as if they were ancient artifacts” (Orlando Sentinel) and as the transformation of “disparate materials into elegantly simple compositions of pattern and grace” (Artscope). She has exhibited her paintings nationally and was recently featured in Maine Home + Design magazine’s “One to Watch” profile on standout artists in Maine.  The recipient of a Maine Arts Commission Artist Project Grant; the Juror’s Award in association with the 10th Annual International Encaustic Conference; the Award of Excellence from Encaustic Art Institute; an Emerging Artist Grant from International Encaustic Artists; and a Pace House residency from Maine College of Art, Vander Schaaf currently serves as president elect of New England WAX.  She teaches workshops throughout New England.
