Castle Hill’s Ceramic Technical Apprenticeship Program
Come learn to become a technician in ceramics and work for a 9 month at Castle Hill
This is a NEW Castle Hill Initiative for ceramic artists to learn all of the technical skills in running a safe, effective ceramic program on the end of technical skills. From learning how to fire the gas kiln, salt kiln, wood train kiln. Learn how to maintain equipment and all aspects of becoming a certified Clay technician.
This program will be opened to Intermediate to advance artists and the program will take place from September through May (9 months) with (Summer Option). The program will select 2 - 3 artists (each year) who will live at Castle Hill and will have 24 hour access to the Clay Studio.
Artists will be trained in areas of:
· Kilns: loading, firing, unloading both electric, gas, salt/soda, raku firing and wood kiln
· Slip and Glaze Chemistry: Mixing Glazes, making test tiles
· Clays: Clay bodies - High Fire Cone 10, Raku Clay, recycling
· Studio Maintenance / cleanliness
· Gallery Shows: learn the basics of gallery
Time Commitment: 15 - 20 hour commitment each week from each artist.
24 hour Studio Assess which will include a shared studio and firings
Other Benefits:
Each artist will also have the opportunity to also teach, throughout the season (kids, seniors) for pay.
Each Artist selected will be offered a show in the gallery at the end of their 9 months.
Cost to participate: $1,000 per month (with scholarships up to 50% available)
Priority is given to BIPOC artists. Housing is included in the price to participate in a shared house (private bedroom) in Truro on the grounds of Castle Hill. Firing fees at a very reduced rate.
