In Experiments with Cyanotype we will use the light of the Outer Cape to explore the early photographic process of cyanotype. Cyanotypes are iron based photographs, Prussian blue in color, made by placing objects or negatives onto a hand-coated surface, and exposing them in ultraviolet light.
We will make our own cyanotypes using found objects and from negatives made in class. Students will learn to mix chemistry, coat paper and/or fabric, and expose cyanotypes with the sun or using an ultraviolet light table. These images can be toned various colors using coffee, tea, and other natural materials. We will also spend time exploring the history of cyanotypes and their presence in the contemporary art world.
Tina Tryforos is an artist who has experimented with photographic processes throughout her 30-year career. Her art is semi-documentary and often begins with autobiographical material that explores the natural world and how humans interpret it. She is a book artist, educator, mother, gardener, and lover of the sea. Tina has an MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY and is a recipient of the 2020 Rhode Island State Council of the Arts Fellowship in Photography. She spent the past two years as an artist-in-residence at the Westport Historical Society in Westport MA, and as an artist mentor in photography at New Urban Arts in Providence RI. tinatryforos.com
