During this week long soda-firing course we will fire the Castle Hill Soda Kiln and dive into using colorful glazes that come to life in this atmospheric firing. These vivid, blues, greens and yellows contrasts so wonderfully next to the earth tones that this process is traditionally known for. While the kiln is cooling we will make work on the wheel focusing particularly on making moon jars and wide round bottles. We will conclude by unloading the kiln together to explore the results. Students should bring 2 cubic ft of bisqueware for soda-firing. Clay must be 10 cone only.

Wide flat pieces aren’t ideal as they warp more than usual.  Pieces that are 11” or more in diameter will not fit.**  Students must wear cotton clothing, long sleeves, long pants, closed shoes, and hair protected during the firing day.

Jon Puzzuoli is a full time ceramicist of 22 years.  By day his life is absorbed in clay, both creating and teaching and by night he’s a social media infulencer.  Jon’s passion emanates from educating others in the art of pottery.  Jon is head of the Ceramics Department at Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan and Co-Chair of its Guild of Artists. Developing vivid blue and gold glazes as well as growing crystals on the surface of his wares are a particular focus.
