This workshop is an introduction to working with molten, pigmented beeswax for anyone curious about this method and material. We will explore encaustic as a hands-on process of natural wonder, thoroughly covering encaustic painting technique with an emphasis on experimentation. We’ll go over a variety of substrates, tools & equipment, and health and safety considerations, then we'll dive into the world of melting and fusing, exploring color, transparency, opacity, layering, collage, and all sorts of manipulations. We will alternate between gathering for demonstrations/discussions and concentrated work sessions that will include personal consultations, encouraging each participant to get into their own flow.

A native of New York’s Hudson River Valley, Laura Moriarty makes process-driven works in encaustic. Inspired by geological forces, her sculptural paintings and encaustic monotypes evoke deep time and natural transformation. The artist’s work is shown internationally, and she is the recipient of grants from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She has participated in numerous international residencies, including the Cill Rialaig Project in Co. Kerry, Ireland; the Baer Art Center in Hofsos, Iceland; and the Rabbit Island Artist Residency, where she was the only human on a small island in Lake Superior. She is the author of Table of Contents, a self-published artist's book.
