Instructors: Kim & Tim Rumberger
Saturday, November 8
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
1 session at the Main Campus
Join us as we whip up some delicious treats using traditional and classic French ingredients that your guests (and you) will love, just in time for the holidays. Discover and learn about some kitchen staples for French cooking, and where to find them. Enjoy hands-on experience making baked Calvados-soaked Camembert with sauteed apples, a savory Pissaladière tart that dates back to the 1800s, Jacques Pépin’s easy fresh orange cake with Grand Marnier and crème fraiche (great for a last minute snack or dessert), and a French 75 cocktail with Calvados, an apple brandy which history says was invented in the 1500s. All attendees receive a handout complete with recipes and key French vocabulary. The instructors share stories about their experiences living and traveling in France. They also talk about French art and culture relating to the recipes. Sharing your own experiences is encouraged! Everyone will also enjoy tasting all of the creations together. Simplement délicieux!
Kim and Tim Rumberger have been cooking together for nearly 4 decades, entertaining family and friends with dishes from around the world. Cooking and sharing has been a driving force in their social, professional and family lives, and their reputation for creating fabulous food and drink has followed them throughout the years across several states and continents.
Kim is a lifelong award-winning visual artist who specializes in metal clay jewelry and sculpture. She teaches at various venues Cape-wide and beyond. She is also a trustee at Cape Cod Museum of Art and a mentor for Mass Hire Artworks students. Her second passion has always been cooking and creating gorgeous and delicious food, starting as a child with an EZ-Bake Oven, to learning authentic Mexican and Asian cooking from co-workers in California, to competing in Food Network and other regional cooking challenges. Having been ServSafe certified at the management level, Kim knows how to safely supervise a kitchen and use proper kitchen skills. She has also created custom cakes for weddings, birthdays, retirements, baby showers, and more for two decades – all from scratch ingredients. Her 13 years in education at Barnstable Public Schools has helped her to share her knowledge through effective lessons in a relaxed educational setting.
Tim is a high school language educator in the Mashpee Public Schools. As an undergraduate at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, he was fortunate to work as a teaching assistant for renowned Professor John Rassias, creator of the Rassias Method/Dartmouth Intensive Language Program, which was also used by the Peace Corps (www.rassias.dartmouth.edu). Tim is fluent in French and Spanish. He learned the latter while traveling with friend and fellow journalist-turned-author John Otis (@johnotis on Twitter). He has lived in France and Mexico, traveled to many countries, and continues to collaborate with the Rassias Center. His interest in international language has always included an appreciation for food as an expression of culture. He not only enjoys cooking, but sharing the cultural and historical significance of vocabulary, recipes and ingredients. He is also ServSafe Certified.
Additionally, Tim is a professionally trained and certified bartender and brings his skills to the kitchen to complement every aspect of the meal he and Kim cook together. Tim received his Master's in Teaching from Union College and Certificate of Advance Graduate Studies from Bridgewater State University. After working for more than two decades as an educator and administrator, he ties teaching, cooking, and language skills to the kitchen classroom with Kim, infused with his awesome sense of humor.
