Instructor: Cole Cook
Monday - Friday
August 10 - 14
9am -12pm
5 sessions

In this course, we will be going over the basics of bas-relief wood carving. This 5 day workshop, participants will be exposed to a score of different techniques, and be able to explore these techniques themselves as they make a bas-relief (or many) over the course of the workshop. The course will cover the use of hand tools, rotary tools, power carving tools, woodshop and tools, sanding solutions, as well as the different stains that can be applied to the finished works. This class is going to be focused on doing. Participants will be able to pick from a selection of "blanks" (flat, square pieces of wood that we can carve into) at the beginning of the course that they will carve into a sculpture by the end of the course - participants are invited and encouraged to make more than one work over the course if they are called to, and to explore different techniques on each. Each class will be a brief instructional period, then a short demonstration, followed by 2 hours of hands-on carving.

The options for bas-relief carving are nearly endless; a sailboat, a family crest, a house name, a study of dune grasses, birds on the wing. This class is going to be focused on the joy of making, and unlocking (if they feel locked to you) the techniques that are used to create these wonderful sculptures.
