Water Is Life!

Water-loving fibers make great paper! Explore some fabulous plants and their amazing abilities for papermaking, sculptures, prints, books and more. Japanese knotweed, Codium seaweed, corn, iris, daylily and flax—all have cellulose fiber for making gorgeous handmade paper. Have fun learning papermaking from historical and contemporary perspectives, with traditional tools and innovative ones like hula hoops and dumpling steamers. We'll cook fibers, beat and/or blend them, pull or pour sheets and turn them into fascinating art forms to take home. No prior papermaking or art experience is necessary. Be prepared to get wet, have fun and make great stuff!

Sheryl Jaffe is a plant lover who studied traditional hand papermaking in Japan and China and teaches papermaking and book arts in New England and Internationally. She works with non-traditional materials and tools. Her projects inspire others to synthesize diverse elements from their experiences with the natural world. She works with organic materials, handmade paper from local and exotic plant fibers, beach stones, and found objects to create 2- and 3-D works that are reminiscent of the human body and the strength and frailty of skin.
