If there are any talented teens interested in the other workshops, specifically for adults, please let us know, and we will check with the with the teacher. In most cases it is fine.


Mural Painting on the Beach Shacks in Truro Tia Scalcione

This class involves creating a site-specific mural for one of Truro’s town beach buildings. Since this will become a permanent work of art on display, children will collaborate in the murals’ design and be responsible for making decisions regarding it’s style, color palette, etc. Site will be announced at a later date and parents will be required to drop- off/pick -up students at Castle Hill or on site.

Tia Scalcione received her BFA from Boston University, School of Fine Arts with a disciplinary focus in painting and education. She has worked in a variety of arts education settings, including the East Boston Social Centers where she coordinated after-school art programs for children, Castle Hill Center for the Arts in Truro and PAAM. She has exhibited work at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, and the New Bedford Art Museum. Tia was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center in 2005.

A fun photography class for all ages! Cameras will be created from everyday objects like tin cans and then loaded with photographic paper on which to record images which will come to life using basic darkroom techniques. This is a simple, hands-on way to understand photography that can produce surprisingly dynamic and beautiful images. No previous photographic experience is necessary (although experienced photographers may relish the opportunity to explore and play outside the usual boundaries.) Experimentation will be nurtured and encouraged! An ideal class for parents and kids to take together.


Feltmaking Rebecca Welsh

Come explore feltmaking as an art form. This exciting class will take you through feltmaking basics and on to advanced techniques. Feltmaking is an ancient, lo-tech process which involves layering natural fibers such as wool and silk and rubbing them together with hot, soapy water on a glass washboard. Bring your imagination and discover the endless possibilities of feltmaking.

Rebecca Welsh is co-owner of Hansard Welsh Design with her business partner Lesley Hansard. They have been in business ten years, won various awards, been on the Martha Stewart show and have exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Show, Philadelphia Museum of Art craft show, Crafts at the Castle and various other exhibitions.
 


Teen throwing Caitlin Nesbit

This class is an introduction to throwing on the potter's wheel for teenagers 12 and older. We will focus on basic throwing techniques for creating functional forms, including cups, bowls, and vases. Teachers will provide daily demonstrations at the start of class, as well as one-on-one attention with students during work time. Students are welcome to use the tools provided in studio, or there will be tool sets available for purchase. Each student should bring an apron or old towel, and be ready to purchase clay on the first day of class. Work produced in class will be bisque fired by the following week. If students want to glaze their pieces at an additional cost, they can either sign up for a low-fire, or high-fire glaze session.

Caitlin Nesbit is a Cape Cod native who works at Castle Hill as the Head Ceramics Studio Manager. She obtained her BFA in Ceramics from UMASS Amherst after spending two semesters at UNM Albuquerque. She has been making both sculptural and functional pottery for ten years. Caitlin has been teaching art classes for all ages at Cotuit Center for the Arts in a variety of mediums. She also spent seven years working for the Town of Barnstable Recreation Division, where she ran a swim program and supervised creative after-school programs.


Writing From the Right Side of the Brain Jamie Cat Callan

Writing from the right side of the brain means writing from that mysterious place within yourself that is intuitive, nonlinear, and sometimes completely illogical. This three day workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to explore techniques for creating stories, prose poems and creative nonfiction. It includes lots of zany mind-bending writing exercises that are guaranteed to shake up your writing life and expand the way you see the world.

Jamie Cat Callan is the creator of The Writers Toolbox, which Writers Marketplace has dubbed, "Julia Cameron meets "Who's Line is it, Anyway?" She's the author of three young adult novels, Over the Hill at Fourteen, The Young and The Soapy, and Just Too Cool. Jamie's work has been published in The New York Times Modern Love column, The Missouri Review, Story, American Letters & Commentary and many other places. Her essays on culture, beauty and fashion appear regularly in Bliss Magazine. Jamie has an MFA from Goddard College in Creative Writing and an MFA from U.C.L.A.'s School of Theatre, Film and Television in Screenwriting. She has taught writing at Yale University, Educational Center for the Arts High School, Wesleyan University, NYU, UCLA, Grub Street and Media Bistro.


Handbuilding and Raku Firing for Teens Lois Hirshberg

Designed for the beginner in mind, but also appropriate for the more experienced, teens will learn basic handbuilding techniques in a supportive atmosphere with their peers. They will be introduced to several methods of constructing with clay including pinch pots, slabs, and coils. Students will be encouraged to explore their own ideas while learning about the exciting possibilities of clay. At the end of the week, we will be firing our clay creations using the exciting raku technique.

Lois Hirshberg began working in clay in 1976 at Mudflat Studios in Cambridge. She holds a M.Ed in community counseling, and a M. A. in Art Therapy from Leslie University. She has studied ceramics at the Bezalel School of Design in Jerusalem, and in Japan while spending a summer there through the Parsons School of Design, where she was greatly influenced. www.potterybylois.com

Work on taking your pottery skills to the next level. This course will cover how to throw more advanced forms, like larger bowls, bottles, and vases.
jeff butler is a studio potter working in Brewster, MA. After finishing his apprenticeship to a master potter in Connecticut, he returned to the Cape to interpret the shapes he learned and developed his own style.

Jeff frequently teaches pottery and works at the May Center in Chatham, a school for autistic children.
