Tom Gladwell: Acting Technique

July 9 - 13
Monday – Friday, 2- 4pm
5 Sessions, $310
Castle Hill
For academic credit $360

Geared for new and experienced actors who are developing skill for performance and audition, this workshop will introduce participants to the celebrated techniques originated by legendary acting teacher Sanford Meisner. Relying on each actor’s native abilities, the class will enable them to access their natural impulses, and to channel their behavior into truthful behavior for the stage. This technique will be applied to improvisation with others and will include a range of useful exercises that each actor will be able to apply to future endeavors. All ages are encouraged to enroll.

Tom Gladwell has directed many productions in New York, at theaters including La Mama, Ubu Repertory, New York Theater Workshop and Theatre for the New City. His most recent work includes directing new plays by John J. McLaughlin (Lycanthrope and Woof), Jane Edith Wilson (Train of Thought) and four world premiere productions written by Harry Kondoleon: The Little Book of Professor Enigma, The Convertible of Love, Half Off and The Houseguests, which received the Obie Award for Best Play. He has also directed numerous films, including Hand-Me-Downs, which received an award from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and The Witch, from the story by Shirley Jackson. He studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner and received a degree in film from New York University.

This course is designed for new and more experienced set designers as well as helpful to actors, artists, directors, producers, and playwrights. We will design a set for a play that each person has chosen. Beginning with the initial design phase and the first and finished sketches. We will proceed to the drafting of floor plans and elevations. Attention will be paid to practical and aesthetic limitations and challenges, and the goals of the writer and director. Exploring this creative and technical process should give participants a better understanding of this very complex art form.

Jacqueline Gelernter Levinson is a fine arts graduate of Cooper Union and has a BA in art education and an MFA in theatre arts from Montclair State University. She studied acting and set design at Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop and William Patterson University. She worked as a designer in the lighting industry, was an educator for arts and theatre, and has designed sets for regional theatres on Cape Cod, in New Jersey, and in New York City.
