This class is for students who enjoy exploring the world around them. We shall collect natural forms, such as leaves, twigs, flowers, pine needles, shells, and stones. We’ll observe patterns such as the veins in a leaf, ridges on a shell, lines on the bark of a tree, and then discuss whether or not they differ from manmade forms and patterns. After a brief discussion, and viewing collage done by other artists, we can return outside to narrow our search for organic materials suitable for this process. Students are encouraged to bring collections from home and family outings. They will create collages by using paper, found materials, glue, and mark making tools such as charcoal, paint, pencil, and ink. Paper can be torn or cut with a scissors, sand could be glued to a rigid surface. Composition and balance will be discussed. By the end of the class everyone will have something to take home.
