Artist-In-Residence Program at the Cape Cod National Seashore

This Artist-in-Residence program, started in the summer of 1996, is a joint effort between the Cape Cod National Seashore, Fine Arts Work Center, Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and Peaked Hill Trust, a non-profit organization which manages some of the dune shacks located on the grounds of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Artists and writers can use the Margo-Gelb shack for two weeks. In return, they are asked to complete an activity for the Cape Cod National Seashore, depending on the type of work done by the artist/writer. These activities may include participation in an exhibition, reading, or presentation to a local school. Although former FAWC Fellows and members of the Art Association or Castle Hill have priority, any working artist/writer may apply for the residency. Applications are due at the beginning of each year, this year: March 16, 2012, with selections made around the middle of March for the upcoming season (mid-May through mid-October).

The Margo-Gelb shack is a very basic structure and staying there is akin to camping. It is a one-room shelter without electricity or running water in the midst of serenity, beauty and privacy. The Atlantic Ocean is a few hundred feet away, and Provincetown is about a mile away—most of it over sand (about half an hour’s walk to a paved road). The shack contains two single beds, bench, chairs and table, kerosene lamps, dry sink, small gas stove, small gas refrigerator, and outhouse. The pump for water is a short walk away. Peaked Hill Trust provides pots, pans, dishes, eating and cooking utensils, pillows and some blankets. Residents need to bring their own linens, blankets, towels, and consumables. Transportation is provided only at the beginning and end of each residency.
Only members can request a shack and the OCARC deadline is: March 16, 2012. So become a member!!

Residency Application for National Seashore Dune Shacks

The Provincetown Community Compact will be accepting applications for Dune Shack residency for the 2011 season with a deadline of January 16, 2011.
The Dune Shacks are located within the Cape Cod National Seashore and protected by The Peaked Hill Bars National Register district. At the same time, they remain fixed indelibly in the consciousness of the local community. Balancing these dual interests, The Compact's programs support and enhance federal public access and interpretive goals while strengthening the community bonds of people and place.
