Artist-In-Residence Program at the Cape
Cod National Seashore This Artist-in-Residence program, started in the summer of 1996, is a joint effort between the Cape Cod National Seashore, Fine Arts Work Center, Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and Peaked Hill Trust, a non-profit organization which manages some of the dune shacks located on the grounds of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Artists and writers can use the Margo-Gelb shack for two weeks for a nominal fee ($300). In return, they are asked to complete an activity for the Cape Cod National Seashore, depending on the type of work done by the artist/writer. These activities may include participation in an exhibition, reading, or presentation to a local school. Although former FAWC Fellows and members of the Art Association or Castle Hill have priority, any working artist/writer may apply for the residency. Applications are due at the beginning of each year, this year: Feb 19th, 2010, with selections made around the middle of March for the upcoming season (mid-May through mid-October). The Margo-Gelb shack is a very basic structure and staying there is akin to camping. It is a one-room shelter without electricity or running water in the midst of serenity, beauty and privacy. The Atlantic Ocean is a few hundred feet away, and Provincetown is about a mile away—most of it over sand (about half an hour’s walk to a paved road). The shack contains two single beds, bench, chairs and table, kerosene lamps, dry sink, small gas stove, small gas refrigerator, and outhouse. The pump for water is a short walk away. Peaked Hill Trust provides pots, pans, dishes, eating and cooking utensils, pillows and some blankets. Residents need to bring their own linens, blankets, towels, and consumables. Transportation is provided only at the beginning and end of each residency. Only members can request a shack and the OCARC deadline is: February 10th. So become a member!! If you have any questions, or wish to obtain an application form, please contact Peaked Hill Trust (PHT), PO BOx 1705, Provincetown, MA 02657. For an application click here , the deadline for the 2010 shacks is February 19! For any other questions, contact: Hatty Walker Fitts, 22 Nelson Avenue,
Provincetown, MA 02657, phone: 508-487-9507 or 3635.
All Shacks are lit with oil lamps THE C-SCAPE DUNE SHACK Residencies for the
Public, Artists & Writers The “C-Scape” Dune Shack was constructed in the early 1940’s by Eddie and Mary Nunes, Provincetown natives who also gave it its name. It was built from two different shacks—one coming all the way from Brockton, MA and the other originally located near what is now the Race Point Ranger Station. Interestingly, C-Scape is the only surviving dune shack located within the original Provincelands—which has been public land since Colonial times. In 1978, C-Scape and other nearby shacks were relocated to their current sites from the eroding barrier dune.- Today, C-Scape is one of 17 shacks located within the Peaked Hill Bars National Register Historic District. The primitive nature of the structure—no electricity, indoor plumbing, or telephone—and its physical isolation allow for uninterrupted solitude and refuge. The dwelling is a 1 1/2 story, three- room structure, including a studio and wood stove. It has a propane cooking stove and small refrigerator, and a composting toilet. C-Scape residencies are open to the general public; we also have special programs: 1. Artist-in-Residence: Program for visual artists. Three 3-week stays in summer, with one including a $500 Fellowship. Artists must participate in the National Seashore's Interpretive Program, once per week, in which a group of up to 10 visitors will visit the shack. Residencies will be awarded by the Project Review Committee. (Students not eligible.) This is a highly competitive program. If applying for this program please include: ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED VIA EMAIL (thecompact@comcast.net)
with your name in the subject line. Your email submission must include:
one page (or less) written statement addressing how the residency will
enhance your work and further the public understanding of the dune environment; The postmark deadline for Artist-in-Residence applications is February 15, 2010. For an application Click HERE for C-Scape or for Fowler click HERE 2. Writers Residencies. We offer two one-week, subsidized residencies for writers of ALL genres, and we have eliminated the usual process of selection based on jurors' views on the quality of the writing. This process eliminates lots of time, paper work and more importantly, creates a level playing field for neophyte and accomplished writers. We employ a simple lottery. STEP ONE: Send us your name, address and email and we will put your name in a hat and select twenty names. STEP TWO: We will contact the twenty selected writers and ask that each send up to three pages of writing, along with an artist statement and/or a resume. We will then place the names of those submissions in a hat and select the two resident writers. Deadline: February 15, 2010. 3. Community Residency: Open to any member of the general
public, nonprofit organizations and businesses. One week stays in the
spring and fall. No more than 2 adults may stay in the Shack at one time.
Based on response, weeks will be allocated by a lottery for each week.
Please indicate your selected weeks in order of preference (i.e. 1st,
2nd, 3rd choice, etc.). 4. Friends of C-Scape Residency: Three weeks have been
set aside for selection by lottery from the Friends supporters: May 22
thru May 29; September 25 thru October 2; November 6 thru November 13
