Highlands Center Moving Forward with Construction of Cape Cod’s First Wood-fired Pottery Kiln

Truro, MA At meetings in December and January, the governing boards of the Highlands Center at the Cape Cod National Seashore (Highlands Center) and the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill (Castle Hill) agreed to work together to complete planning and construction of Cape Cod’s first wood-fired pottery kiln and kiln building at the Highlands Center. Castle Hill will oversee the management of pottery operations, when complete, and will assist in raising funds for the construction in this first collaborative venture between the two organizations. The total cost for construction of the kiln and the kiln building is estimated at $80,000.

As a first step in the project, Castle Hill will hold Kiln Building Workshops during fall of 2007. Construction will follow plans similar to those of the Train Kiln designed by John Neely of Utah State University. The building and kiln plans have already been submitted to the National Park Service (NPS), and are currently pending approval.

"Our board is eager to see this project succeed,” said Cherie Mittenthal, Castle Hill’s Executive Director. “The addition of a wood burning kiln will draw visitors to the region, stimulate the local economy and foster the local tradition of working artists and craftspeople, in addition to being a wonderful benefit to the community of potters here on Cape Cod.”

“We are please to be working with the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill as a Program Partner on this project,” said Robert Ciolek, the Highlands Center’s Executive Director. “The reconstruction of a building into a home for a wood-fired pottery kiln is an important next step in the redevelopment of the overall Highlands Center site. It provides the Cape arts community with a wonderful resource and brings the Highlands Center one step closer to being the collaborative community resource we envision. We are reaching out to the community and seeking support.”

If you are interested in contributing to the Kiln Project or would like additional information on the Highlands Center please call Robert Ciolek at 508-349-7300 or visit the website at www.hcitruro.org.

The Highlands Center at the Cape Cod National Seashore is a non-profit organization with a mission to assist the National Park Service (NPS) in the redevelopment of the 110-acre site of the former North Truro Air Force Station and to realize the shared vision of creating a facility that will become a collaborative community for artists, scientists and educators. The site is owned by the federal government and managed by the National Park Service
